Background for China Spytrap

The Communist Party of China made an offer to build a beautiful Chinese garden in Washington DC in 2017. It is also believed that 100 million dollars will be spent on this building. In addition to temples and pavilions, a 70 feet Chinese pagoda will also be built. Washington’s local officials were enthusiastic about this offer because it is expected to attract thousands of tourists every year. However, America’s counterintelligence groups alerted the officials on these matters (hidden agenda of China).

The supposed 70 feet Pagoda will be built very high, just two miles away from the US government buildings in Washington DC. This location is ideal for China to collect signals of America’s intelligence information. Doubts were also expressed about the material that was said to be used for the construction of this pagoda. They were surprised to know that all this material is expected to be brought from China through diplomatic channels where there is no scope for inspections. As a result, the proposal was rejected by the federal authorities before construction began. It was concluded that this project is a part of China’s counter-intelligence plan.

The dangerous plan since 2017

Since 2017, federal authorities have been investigating China’s purchase of land in key locations in the United States. In addition, the local consulate, which was a hotbed for Chinese spies, was closed. Chinese spies have been found to have installed listening devices at key military and government offices. Especially the equipment and cell towers set up by the Huawei company at the military bases in the rural areas of Midwest America have caused concern to the authorities.

Investigative agencies realized that these could interfere with the Department of Defense’s secured communications. Officials believed that the Strategic Command, which oversees America’s nuclear weapons, would also be affected. The authorities have not disclosed the investigation reports conducted on these. It is not clear whether any information has been sent to China from here. On the other hand, these allegations have been completely denied by Huawei and the Chinese government. It claims that its equipment cannot intercept military communications. According to the CNN article, the version of American officials is completely different. Experts say the devices can intercept any communications.

Actions against China’s threat

In recent times, US officials have often exposed the threat posed by China. This month, the National Counter Intelligence and Security Center issued a warning to businessmen and local politicians. It is said that they will be used to influence US policies. The FBI has recently had to open a Chinese counterintelligence investigation every 12 hours on average. So far there are 2,000 such.

China’s equipment has been found along the Interstate-25 highway leading to most of America’s nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missile sites. In 2011, the Chinese company signed an agreement with Vaira, a local provider in the region, to supply 3G and other equipment. After ten years, the company has set up a total of 1,000 towers in five states.

Since 2014, The firm has installed birdseye cameras on these towers and is observing traffic and weather movements. With this, there is a danger that the information about the movement of American forces and weapons will reach China. Federal Communications said that small operators should not use Chinese-made equipment in rural areas of America. Congress has allocated $1.9 billion in 2020 to remove Chinese-made Huawei and ZTE equipment from rural America. But, still, they continue like that. There are a total of 24 thousand devices.
